{"id":14,"date":"2009-07-16T22:57:58","date_gmt":"2009-07-17T05:57:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/elliottjohnson.net\/blog\/?p=14"},"modified":"2009-07-16T23:36:24","modified_gmt":"2009-07-17T06:36:24","slug":"71109-starter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/elliottjohnson.net\/blog\/71109-starter\/","title":{"rendered":"7\/11\/09 &#8211; Starter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The night before was my first time looking over the bus as I bought it by proxy of\u00a0 my friend Reid May.\u00a0 He owns an older karmann ghia and was heading down to Fresno from Oakland.\u00a0 He did a great job describing it.\u00a0 It&#8217;s an older car and has condition issues.<\/p>\n<p>The year my car was made, a 6v electrical system was used.\u00a0 About 10 years ago the bus was converted to 12v.\u00a0 Some things were easy to convert and somethings a bit more difficult were left to be delt with, such as the starter.<\/p>\n<p>The starter is a 6v system that runs on 12v.\u00a0 The 6v starter can run on 12 volts, but should not be heavily used.\u00a0 Mine in particular had a looseness to it that is caused over time by the hammering of the 6v solinoid running on 12volts.\u00a0 This looseness allowed the starter to engage when it shouldn&#8217;t as well as fail to engage when it should.<\/p>\n<p>The pain of trying to run a 12v starter in this bus is that 12v starters are built to work with a larger flywheel, which requires grinding out a lot of metal to install.\u00a0 Wayne Johnson said he would ship out this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesamba.com\/vw\/classifieds\/detail.php?id=551031\">hybrid starter<\/a> in a week or so.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16\" title=\"Dad proping open the engine compartmen.\" src=\"http:\/\/elliottjohnson.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/dad-engine-compartment-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Dad proping open the engine compartmen.\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/elliottjohnson.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/dad-engine-compartment-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/elliottjohnson.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/dad-engine-compartment-1024x682.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/elliottjohnson.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/dad-engine-compartment.jpg 1127w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dad proping open the engine compartmen.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Took off the bumper for easier access and my dad loosened the starter&#8217;s bolt from back right wall of the engine compartment behind the fan cover and clamped vice grips on it.\u00a0 From underneath I could get a ratchet on it and loosen it the rest of the way.<\/p>\n<p>At this time Glenn showed up in his perfect 56 bug and took me over to Lester&#8217;s house, who has a\u00a0 finished 59 delux and a panel for his son.\u00a0 Lester mentioned an oil bath air filter he might part with for a reasonable price and that I should get the starter tested at Sebring West.\u00a0 Glenn took me back and I along with my Dad finished pulling out the starter.\u00a0 It&#8217;s hefty and tight in places to maneuver around the break cables and heater tubes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17\" style=\"width: 314px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17\" title=\"original Bosch 6v starter\" src=\"http:\/\/elliottjohnson.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/starter.jpg\" alt=\"original Bosch 6v starter\" width=\"304\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"http:\/\/elliottjohnson.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/starter.jpg 633w, http:\/\/elliottjohnson.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/starter-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 304px) 100vw, 304px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">original Bosch 6v starter<\/p><\/div>\n<p>My Dad turned over the engine as I took photographs of the flywheel teeth as well as feeling them.\u00a0 The teeth were pretty square, but effected by the starter.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve got those photos on my Dad&#8217;s computer, so I&#8217;ll update with them.<\/p>\n<p>Off to Sebring West to get the starter tested.\u00a0 It was toast, but they had both 6v and 12v starters that my Dad and I looked at that were noticeably different in size and teeth spacing.\u00a0 We decided to do some more research before buying a replacement, so I tested the voltage with a volt meter when we got home and verified that it was indeed running off of 12v.\u00a0 After a pasta dinner at my great aunt&#8217;s house I was looking online and came across Wayne&#8217;s ad.\u00a0 He&#8217;s a nice guy and I hope the new replacement will work well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The year my car was made there was a 6v electrical system used.
